- The Great Contemporary Art Bubble Trailer Documentary by Ben Lewis
|
Ben Lewis's new documentary 'The Great Contemporary Art Bubble' You can now buy this film on DVD from my website www.benlewis.tv It investigates the reasons behind the boom and bust of contemporary art. The Great Contemporary Art Bubble BBC Four. Monday 18th May. 9.00pm. The last five years have seen an unprecedented craze for contemporary art. Contemporary art prices rose by an average of 800% while works by Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Mark Rothko sold for record-breaking prices of £30 million plus. Art critic and film-maker Ben Lewis spent 2008 following the contemporary art market; travelling to art fairs, auctions, museums and the offices and homes of billionaire art collectors. He spoke to dealers, auctioneers, gallery-owners, art market analysts and art collectors trying to find out the reasons behind the greatest rise in the value of art in history. He says: I didnt like what was happening in the contemporary art marketMuch of the art was mass produced, repetitive and commercial. Collectors bought it for investment and stored vast amounts of it in warehousesAnd the special privileges our society gave to art and artists were being exploited by some of the worlds richest people to make yet more money. Everywhere Ben went he was told the contemporary art boom would go on forever fuelled by a new passion for art from the worlds super-rich. But he found other reasons for the boom unusual market practices, speculation, secrecy and tax breaks involving the whole art ... |

- Inside IRAN's underground billion-dollar art gallery
|
It's one of the finest collections of modern art anywhere in the world, but you won't find it in New York or Paris. Dozens of works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock — together valued at roughly billion — are locked in a basement in Tehran. Only a handful of westerners have had an up-close look at the underground archives in Tehran's Museum of Contemporary Art. ABC News was granted exclusive access inside the vault that holds a priceless collection Iranian authorities choose to keep locked away. What was revealed was astonishing: a series of paintings by Picasso; a wall's worth of pop art by Roy Lichtenstein; Warhol portraits of Jackie Onassis, Mick Jagger and Marilyn Monroe; a Diego Rivera self portrait; and a painting many consider to be the best Jackson Pollock outside of North America. The collection was supposed to be a gift to the Iranian people. It was assembled by the Shah of Iran and his wife using public funds during the oil boom of the 1970s. Tehran's Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated in 1977, designed to be one of the world's landmark modern art institutions, with an international collection worthy of that ambition. But just months later came the Islamic Revolution. The Shah was deposed, Ayatollah Khomeinei was became the country's leader, and in the Revolutionary, anti-American climate the museum's western art was banished to the basement. Why aren't the pieces shown to the public? The reasons are a mix of ideology and ... |

- Call for submissions to Young Creators' Unit @ Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Deadline September 17
Buddies In Bad Times Theatre
announces a call for submissions for
YOUNG CREATORS' UNIT
YCU Director Evalyn Parry
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: September 17, 2010, 5 pm
Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Young Creators Unit (YCU) provides a supportive and artistically rigorous space for four queer-identified artists (age 25 and under) to develop and perform their own original, 25-minute, solo performance piece. Under the creative mentorship of YCU Director Evalyn Parry, members of the YCU workshop their material through the weekly Unit meetings, and present their final works at the 32nd Rhubarb Festival in February 2011.
The YCU is dedicated to developing the work of promising, emerging queer creator/performers. We are interested in work that pushes the boundaries of theatrical creation, and in keeping with Buddies’ mandate, have a particular interest in work that reflects “queerness” either in terms of LGBT identity, and/or in terms of difference, being outside the mainstream, challenging in both content and form.
The 2010/11 Unit will meet on Mondays for 12 weeks, beginning October 18, 2010, thru Jan 31st 2011. In February, each YCU artist is paired with a director to work toward the final presentation of their show at Rhubarb. To participate, you MUST be available for all YCU meetings, plus be available for additional rehearsal time in January and February. Participants will receive an honorarium for their participation.
The YCU supports a wide definition of “performance”, and sets no particular limitations or guidelines as to the nature of the proposed projects (aside from a time limitation of 25 minutes). However, we do ask that the requested writing sample / support materials be original, and closely related to the proposed project, so we can fairly evaluate the project’s feasibility.
YCU SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
- Download the YCU application form from our website at buddiesinbadtimes.com
- To apply, fill out the application form and along with the following (in print, in Word .doc or pdf format):
- A letter of introduction (1 page). We want to know get to know you.

60x60 Project is a one-hour-long show made by sequencing 60 pre-recorded pieces by 60 different composers, each piece a minute in length or shorter.
